A MOORLAND GATE ... by Frazer Irwin

"There can’t be many who haven’t passed through St Winifred’s Gate at some time. But how many realise its connections with the town’s history, both past and near present? A former resident of this Town and her sister would often play on the gate. She is now known world-wide. Others not so well known, have also spent hours swinging on this small, wooden moorland gate. These verses, so I understand, always bring back childhood memories to them, where ever in the World they may be."

Hello little gate!
It's been a long time
Since you and I spent
Childhood hours
Together.
Yet others pass and say,
A gate.
A simple, moorland gate.
To me, little gate,
Your a friend.
A long lost happy friend.
How we played on you,
Swung on you,
Climbed on you.
We talked and opened
Our hearts to you.
Little gate, moorland gate,
Lovable, caring,
Saint Winifred's Gate

They pass without a second glance,
They kick and knock at every chance.
You take it all every day,
Not an angry word you say.
But we love you
Little gate.
Little wooden, moorland gate.
You are with us where ever we roam,
Close to you, or far from home,
You are lovable, little gate.
Little, wooden, St Winifred’s gate
