SHELL SHOCKED ... by Frazer Irwin

"The Colton mentioned in this poem, lies about a mile and a half from Whitkirk, near Leeds. Close by is Temple Newsam, one of the Country’s great historic houses, a former Knights Templars Estate, whose owners may have travelled in Wharfedale. There being a former Templars House just outside old Burley in Wharfedale village, at Scalebor, from whom the former hospital is named. Also, Temple Newsam is connected to Denton Hall, by virtue of the marriage between a Faifax and an Ingram. It may be of interest to some, the old Colton village school was sold reacently by Dacre, Son and Hartley. Thus bringing a further connection with Yorkshire’s colourful history to Ilkley. Attending Colton School in the early fifties, with it’s former rural surroundings, did much to influence the writings of Frazer Irwin in later life. Perhaps visitors to the Ilkley Pages, may also remember life as it was both in Colton and Ilkley nearly Fifty years ago? They may even come up with some of the town’s lost history! (Anyone a former pupil at Colton C of E village school - 1952 to 58, we’d like to hear from you)".

It's thirty years since I was here
When this was just a village.
It's thirty years since I was here
Before this rape and pillage.
A village school
A village hall
A chapel on the corner,
The daisy fields and autumn trees
The smell of hay new mown.

A Gypsy camp in Gypsy Lane
With van and vardo neatly laid,
For a meal from the fields
Where brick and mortar
Stand upon.

The mill, once proud,
Now just a shell,
By Bullathorpe it stands.
Midst gas mains and a crumbling farm
Within a clump of derelict trees,
Forgotten.

Colton!

What has happened?
Where has your village gone?
