"The man with the
donkeys, was Donkey Jackson who lived in the Bridge
Lane area. He carried visitors to White Wells on his
animals, when they took the waters, during Ilkleys
early days as a Spa Town. One of which would have been
Charles Darwin.
Those who have lived in this area, long enough, will
realise how much has changed and also, the feelings behind this
verse."
The other day, I walked a street
mid leafy boughs and soft hoof beat.
Where moorland breezes cooled the air
And parasols, hid maidens, fair.
There in the distance
Fading from sight,
A man led his donkeys
Home for the night.
Those sun dappled pavements
Are silent no more,
No donkeys, horse carriages,
Just a motorised roar!
The parasols gone,
Fair maids, one by one.
Their children and grandchildren
Dont care anymore. No longer the village
I knew as a child,
Just a place where the architect
And planner go wild.
